Brookfield Zoo, commonly known as the Chicago Zoological Park, is a zoo in Brookfield, Illinois, a Chicago suburb. On an area of 216 acres, it shelters approximately 450 species of animals (87 ha). It debuted on July 1, 1934, and rapidly received international attention for using moats and ditches to separate animals from visitors and other animals rather than cages. The zoo was also the first in the United States to show giant pandas, one of which (Su Lin[4]) has been taxidermied and is now on display at Chicago’s Field Museum of Natural History. Brookfield Zoo produced the nation’s first fully indoor dolphin exhibit in 1960, and Tropic World, the first fully indoor rainforest simulation and the world’s largest indoor zoo exhibit at the time, debuted in the 1980s.
The Cook County Forest Preserve District owns the Brookfield Zoo, which the Chicago Zoological Society operates. The society supports several research and conservation activities across the world. For skating lovers, Maggie Daley Park Ice Skating Ribbon is a place no less than heaven.
