On July 4, 2002, the Rolling Meadows Historical Museum opened the 1950s House and the Kimball Hill Family Education Center. The historic home was designed to be a replica of the first ranch-style home built in the Rolling Meadows community in 1953 by founder Kimball Hill. Visitors come to this replica home to enjoy the “time machine” experience of being transported back to the 1950s. The 1950s House was the first in the country to be built to interpret this era, and it looks and feels authentically 1950s.

The museum buildings were built using a 1953 three-bedroom house design plan called the “Laurel.” Various 1950s-era furnishings and artifacts were donated and combined to create authentic interior spaces within the home. A primary goal in replicating one of the community’s original homes, right down to the details of the popular decor of the time, was to stay true to historical records.
